We need oxygen in order to survive.

Your lungs are constantly working to perform the complex task of breathing in and transferring oxygen around to your whole body. Did you know that you breathe approximately 22,000 times per day!

Emotions can affect different regions of the brain and taking deep breaths can calm this down. When you feel stressed or anxious you may feel that your breathing pattern also changes. If you start to take small shallow breaths, and use your shoulders rather than your diaphragm to move air in and out of your lungs. You need to take a moment to stop what you are doing and complete a quick breathing exercise.

Here are some interesting facts from the lung foundation Australia:

  • Your left lung is smaller than your right lung, to accommodate for your heart.

  • 70% of waste is eliminated through your lungs just by breathing.

  • Can you live without one lung? Yes you can, it limits your physical ability but doesn’t stop you from living a relatively normal life. Many people around the world live with just one lung.

  • Children and women are faster breathers than men because their breathing rate is higher.

  • Humans exhale up to 17.5 millilitres of water per hour.
